Botanical information:
Angelica,whose scientific name is Dong Quai, has many names like Angelica polymorpha, Chinese Angelica, Danggui, Tang-Kuei, etc.
Dong Quai ,which grows in northern and western areas of China, is a good remedy for colds, coughs, pleurisy, wind, colic, rheumatism and diseases of the urinary organs, and it is generally used as a stimulating expectorant, combined with other expectorants the action of which is facilitated, and to a large extent diffused, through the whole of the pulmonary region. It is also a useful agent for feverish conditions, acting as a diaphoretic.

The main medicinal part of Dong Quai is the root, which has a pleasant spicy smell and a sweet-spicy taste and are harvested from plants when 2 or 3 years old. The roots resemble parsnips or carrots. They can be used fresh, but dried and powdered to be made into capsules or extracts much more frequently
Angelica extracts are concentrated on liquid preparations which are usually made by soaking chopped or mashed plant parts in liquid such as alcohol, then straining out the solid parts. Angelica is seldom used alone. Most often it is combined with other herbals in combination products.
